Summary: Alex and Sarah have a short discussion about murderers and cheats.
“Why don’t you like Kennet?” Sarah asked, twisting a lock of her long brown hair between her fingers as she looked up from her homework.
Alex ignored the way the sun cast golden highlights over the curls. “Because he’s a psychopath.” Why did it even need to be asked?
She shrugged and returned to her papers. “Aren’t we all?”
He wasn’t. He focused on his own notes rather than think about how she’d only sat herself in front of him, without warning or ceremony, ten minutes before just to ask that inanity. And why did she think he wanted to talk about Kennet anyway? “What’re you working on?”
“Science,” she said, looking up without halting her pen.
It was creepy when she did that; it was probably just as weird when he did it. He squinted down at her impeccable handwriting. “What are you doing?”
She smiled sweetly at him, her hand still moving. “Making sure no one can cheat from my notes.”
“If you mean me, I—”
“No, I don’t mean you.” She laughed, making a vague gesture with her head in the direction of Crevan and Lucia who were sharing a table not too far away and were clearly trying their best not to look like they were eavesdropping. He ignored them. Crevan had been a lot less talkative ever since Kennet had tried to kill Alex, and Lucia had always stared at him like he was a freak.
Tilting his head to one side, he followed the thread of her notes and frowned. “You’re not just going back along the lines.”
“No.” Her smile widened. “I can write backwards too.”
“Why?”
It was a simple enough question, but her eyebrow rose into an elegant arch. Clearly he wasn’t the only one who’d been practicing. “You don’t think you’ll ever need to?”
“If anyone copies my notes,” he said with absolute certainty, “I’ll beat them senseless.”
“And if it’s Kennet?”
He looked down, away. For that he had no answer. Not yet.
