AC I/II - Sixteen/Lucy - Checkmate
Fandom: Assassin's Creed I/II
Characters: Sixteen/Lucy
Rating: G
Word Count: 333
Summary: Lucy caves in to one of Sixteen's requests, only to find herself surprised.
That he’d expressed an interest in chess took her by surprise. When she approached Vidic about the possibility of letting him use a chess set, the older man had sighed heavily and informed her that if Sixteen stabbed her in the eye with a king then she’d have brought it on herself but he hadn’t risked his career saving her for her to throw her life away on so foolish a whim.
Conceding that he had a point (and so did a king piece, when she thought about it), she settled on the videogame version instead.
What she’d expected she didn’t know. Possibly that her new chess partner would play in a sane and rational manner. “No, come on, really; why did you move that piece?”
He stared at her like she was the mad one. “It makes sense?”
“But...” But it was hopeless and she knew it, even as he stared at her in all seriousness. Instead she released a soft sigh and returned her attention to the screen.
She could have sworn that, beside her, a smile quirked his lips.
“Oh. But you-” He broke off, frowning at the screen. Whatever he’d been expecting with his previous move, it clearly wasn’t for the piece to be immediately captured. Lucy allowed herself her own smile, safe in the knowledge that Sixteen was staring too determinedly at the laptop screen to notice. “Oh, so- I see.” He moved another piece.
Lucy raised her eyebrows. Her own move returned her smile, and deepened his frown. “Check. Mate.”
She knew better than to expect congratulations. Or recriminations or excuses, for that matter. The man beside her was staring at the laptop screen in a single-minded manner that would be disturbing if she hadn’t learned to get used to it (and how fast she’d had to learn, when she’d caught him staring at her in the past). “I see.”
She had no doubt that he did.
The next time they played, she fully expected to lose.
